Finally a Rug

Following a two year search for a rug and some false leads, we now finally have a rug in place. We had originally thought to go with a looped shag rug from Room and Board, but after seeing this woven hemp and metallic suede rug from Serena & Lily our minds were set. We're loving how this works with everything else we have going on in the room while adding some subtle color and sparkle. Let's just hope it's durable as Dibi already had some fun playing with the nubby texture while we unrolled it.

How Many is Enough?

Because I'm a sucker for those "SALE!" emails, we stopped by Restoration Hardware to peruse their July Fourth Holiday Sale. In addition to the extra duvet cover and shams we DID plan on purchasing, we also found a neat throw pillow that would work well on both our couch and bed. Not that we needed an extra pillow for either... but it was on sale... and I do love the vintage French vibe of the whole thing. For now this will sit on our bed, but it could just as easily move to the couch one day too.

Pretty as a Picture

Although it's been framed and hung for awhile now, I'm finally getting around to showing you the art gracing our living room area. This is a vintage British bus panel that we bought quite cheaply on Three Potato Four... and then had framed for eight times the price. Oh well. At least the art itself was a bargin (and matches our vintage NYC subway panel).

Matchy Matchy

Since we've been remiss in updating you on the progress with decorating the apartment, now seemed as good a time as any to show you our new(ish) ottoman. A year after purchasing our Chesterfield Sofa from Canvas Home, we ordered a matching ottoman. Now, three + months later, we have an oversize piece that we not only rest our feet on, but use as a coffee table (sort of). Dibi in particular loves it. It's like the world's largest (and most expensive) cat bed. Too bad he won't let Tonka share.

Beetroot Relish

Today, in honor of summer, we had a traditional American BBQ for dinner. I say it's in honor of summer, but really it was such a perfect day that nothing else seemed appropriate. We grilled up some burgers and made the rest from our CSA delivery. Beetroot relish, sweet potato fries (bake of course), and sweet white corn. The beetroot relish was a particular standout, courtesy of Donna Hay. Since it was SO good, we thought you'd appreciate the recipe too.

BEETROOT RELISH (from Donna Hay)

1/3 cup (80ml) balsamic vinegar

1/3 cup (60g) brown sugar

200g beets, drained and chopped (you can use canned or two fresh beets, roasted and peeled)

Place the vinegar and sugar in a saucepan over low heat and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Add the beet, increase heat to medium and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes or until thickened. Set aside to top on the burgers. Serves about 4.

New Years Organizing

Today we did our part to start 2012 off right--we reorganized our wine rack. Out came every single bottle. We dusted. We assessed. We categorized it all. And we even found that one of our bottles has more than doubled in value to $145! I guess we'll be saving that one for a special occasion...
